Bike Security at the UOC

Anyone that has a precious item stolen from them knows how rare it is to get those belongings back. This is one of the reasons that safety and security have always been taken very seriously at the University of Utah and this includes the Orthopaedic Center and its employees.

After a few bikes were stolen from the Research Park area I met with Sergeant Smith (pictured above with the author's bike) to see what we can do as employees of the University of Utah Orthopaedic Center. Sgt. Smith is from the University of Utah Department of Public Safety and we spoke about a new program being offered for students and faculty that use bicycles for transportation.

This new program is being developed with the help of Sgt. Smith and several other agencies. It involves a free and simple registration process and the discreet placement of a bar coded sticker on your bike. It has a 30 year adhesive with a bar code recognizable by most smart phones that links to your email address anonymously (or other contact information). In the event that a stolen bike is discovered it has a digital fingerprint linking it to you.

To register bring your bike to the U of U Police Department at 1735 E South Campus Drive. or call the  non-emergency line at 801-585-2677.
