Spring Into Gear, Join a CSA

As the weather outside begins warm up more of us will be biking to work and enjoying outdoor activities. Physical activities coupled with a healthy diet are an excellent way to stay fit and focused, which sounds like a perfect time to join a CSA!

A CS What????

The UUOC has a unique opportunity to participate in a CSA project with local farmer, Thayne Tagge.  Tagge's Famous Fruit (you have probably visited one of their many fruit stands  around the valley) is offering a CSA for the first time this year.  Thayne Tagge would like to offer a special delivery to the ortho center - a rare and valuable service to our employees!

What is a CSA?  Community Supported Agriculture is a way for the community, in this case the UUOC, to directly support local farmers in their efforts to provide us with fresh, ethically and locally grown fruits and vegetables.

How Does a CSA Work?  Members purchase a share of a farmer's produce for the growing season. The season for Tagges is 15 weeks beginning the week of July 4th through October 10. 2011.  Members then receive a weekly delivery of what is in season and fresh harvested usually that same day.

Why should I join?  By joining the CSA you will be reducing the transportation cost associated with having fresh produce by both having the food delivered to you and by buying local produce verses that which has been shipped on average 1,000 miles.  You will also have easy access to a varied, local diet.

How do I sign up?  Visit http://www.taggesfamousfruit.com/ where you can read  about the farm.  As you scroll down there is a CSA sign-up where you can choose your share.  Under the pick up location be sure to choose "U of U Ortho Center (Employees only)".

This fresh, local food opportunity is being limited to the first 45 employees who sign-up so sign-up early.  Sign-up prior to April 15th and receive the "Early Frost Discount".

Here are a few quotes about joining a CSA from staff working at the UOC:

"It is very exciting to pick up my box of fruits and veggies every week and peek inside.  It gives me an overall good feeling that I am eating locally grown foods which REALLY do taste better than those grown elsewhere while at the same time helping a small, local farmer." -Cheryl Hanzelka  OTR/CHT

"I'm excited to have the opportunity to have high quality fruits and vegetables delivered to me at the UOC. I'm always crunched for time, and if I was provided with this each week, we'll eat more healthy, For Sure !" Jill Erickson PA-C
